Toronto Police are looking into two new videos believed to be linked to St. Michael's College School in a widening investigation of behaviour of students the elite all boys school.
Insp. Dominic Sinopoli says one of the videos shows an assault with a belt being used as a weapon. The second involves some kind of threat.
Sinopoli could not say when or where the videos were recorded or what may connect them to school near St. Clair Ave W and Bathurst St.
"We have reason to believe that they're linked to St. Mike's, but at this point in time we don't have any credible evidence to suggest that they actually are," Sinopoli told reporters Tuesday.
Officials at St. Mike's say they forwarded two videos to police on Sunday night, sight unseen. It is not clear if these are the same videos police are now examining.
Police are now in possession of four videos showing violence believed to be affiliated with St. Mike's. Investigators are also exploring two other incidents not captured on camera.
Six students were charged Monday in connection with a horrifying alleged gang sexual assault in a locker room in which a broom was used. The attack was recorded and shared on social media sites including Instagram.
The boys, aged 14 and 15, were released on bail after pledging not to speak to each other and some coaches at St. Mikes, to stay away from the complainant and to have a guardian supervise their social media use.
Sinopoli does not believe any of the boys charged appear in the two new videos. Investigators were showing the clips to staff at St. Mike's to see if they recognized anyone.
Police cannot explain what prompted any of the cases of sexual assault, assault or threats they are now exploring. Minutes after offering that some level of violence can be consensual, like when two people agree to a fight, Sinopoli said he has no information pointing to a "fight club" at St. Mike's or a culture of hazing.
St. Michael's board of directors plans to have a committee tasked with a "deep dive" into the culture of the school in place by the first week of December.
St. Mike's has cancelled exams that were scheduled for next month. All events that would have involved external groups or teams as well as public performances are on hold until at least the end of 2018. A key fundraising soirée set for Thursday has been postponed.
