Two drivers have been charged in a frightening Halloween night crash that landed a set of 13-year-old twins in hospital with broken bones
The brother and sister had been trick-or-treating with a 13-year-old male friend near Don Mills Rd and Lawrence Ave when they were hit by a Honda C-RV at about 8:30 p.m.
"We had a vehicle that was travelling on Lawrence at a high rate of speed...witnesses estimated at about 100 km/h, so way over the posted speed limit of 60," Toronto Police Sgt. Brett Moore said Tuesday. "It collided with another motor vehicle near Don Mills. And that vehicle struck another vehicle, so we had three cars involved altogether. The first vehicle that was speeding...left the roadway onto the sidewalk and hit pedestrians that were walking."
On Tuesday morning tire tracks were visible in a patch of grass in front of an apartment building with small bags scattered across the lawn.
The 13-year-old girl suffered "multiple" fractures. Police initially said her injuries were life-threatening but her condition was upgraded in hospital to serious. Her brother too suffered some broken bones. Their friend was not hurt.
The 44-year-old driver of the C-RV has been charged with dangerous driving and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The 35-year-old driver of another one of the cars involved faces an alcohol-related charge.
