Two 18-year-old girls are in hospital, one of them in life-threatening condition, on what should have been a celebratory day for them.
The girls were hit by a car on Bayview Ave south of Finch Ave just before 10 a.m.
They are both students of the Royal Crown Academic School, a private high school for international students, and were on their way to their graduation ceremony nearby.
Const. Clint Stibbe says the girls were crossing mid-block, about 200m from a set of lights.
The driver remained on scene.
Stibbe says that based on witness accounts, police are also investigating whether the teens were also hit by a second car that took off.
A school official says it turned into an emotional day for classmates at the graduation, after they heard about the accident.
Bayview was closed during the police investigation but has since reopened.
