Toronto Police updated the case of a female victim who was shot and subsequently died of her injuries early Sunday morning.
Police Chief Mark Saunders and Detective David Dickinson provided more details of the case at a Sunday afternoon press conference.
The shooting victim has been identified as 31 year old Jenas Nyarko, a native of Ghana, who moved to Canada in 2001 and worked at a shelter.
Nyarko was one of four occupants in a vehicle that was stopped outside a townhouse complex on Replin Road and Old Meadow Lane, near Lawrence Avenue and Allen Road just after 2 a.m. The four had just returned from attending a funeral.
Nyarko was found suffering from gunshot wounds. She was rushed to hospital, but eventually succumbed to her injuries. No one else in the car was injured.
Police released a video showing the victim's car being approached by another vehicle that then fired into the back seat striking Nyarko in the chest, before speeding away.
Dickinson describes the vehicle they are looking for is an SUV.
"2010 to 2016 Cadillac SRX Sport utility vehicle. It is silver or grey in colour and has a sunroof."
According to Dickinson, the shooter in the vehicle opened fire from the back seat. He adds there is no evidence that Nyarko nor any of the other occupants were targeted or involved in any gang crime.
" It would appear that this is a case of individuals coming from one neighbourhood in the city to another neighbourhood and shooting the first residents that they see."
For Chief Saunders, the suspects involved in the brazen drive by killing have no place in his city.
"These thugs that committed this particular act are no means in any type of culture people that society would be very happy with. The fact there's loss of life in this particular situation, I have concerns about that."
The Chief also vowed those responsible for the shooting and murder will be delt with.
"To have an individual shoot at a vehicle that is practically full of occupants and to just drive away nonchalantly is a huge indication that the person(s) we're looking for, they need to know that we're going to do whatever it takes to apprehend them and bring them before the judicial system."
Mayor John Tory, attending the annual Toronto Pride Parade, was asked about the recent gun violence in the city that claimed 3 more lives overnight.
"They are people who are trying to attack our way of life. They are thugs they are people that I have no use for and we've got to get them off the street."
This latest homicide brings the number of murders in the city to 47 in 2018.
Homicide detectives continue to work the case.
