Toronto's Police Chief says outside help will be brought in to get the bottom of what happened on the night a Whitby teenager was beaten.
Investigators from Waterloo Regional Police will be tasked with looking into how their colleagues in Toronto handled the situation.
Allegations are 19-year old Dafonte Miller was savagely beaten with a metal pipe by Toronto Police Const. Michael Theriault and his brother on a late-December night in Whitby.
Theriault was off-duty at the time and allegedly confronted Miller while the teen was walking to his friend's house with a group of buddies.
Miller's lawyer claims one of the men told Miller he's a cop but gave chase to the teenager when he refused to answer his questions.
Miller's eye was damaged so badly in the beating that doctors say he'll lose it.
It was Miller's lawyer who notified Ontario's police watchdog agency and it was only after its investigation that charges were laid against the officer and his brother.
It has been pointed out that their father is John Therieault, a Toronto Police detective who investigates officer conduct.
Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders says the independent review -- which is normally conducted by the person who holds his office -- will examine the chain of events and who was notified.
He says the results will be released as soon as possible.
