At first, Glen Miller wasn't a fan of the multi-coloured spikes that make up the maple leaf in the Canada 150 logo.
He never imagined would keeping paraphernalia emblazoned with it in stock would be a struggle. Now, he loves it.
Miller is co-owner of the Ancaster-based Great Canadian Gift Company, focused on the buffalo plaid, moose, maple brand of Canadiana. The run up to Canada Day is always a busy time for the company but Miller didn't expect the fervour he's seen for sesquicentennial gear.
Sales are up some 50% over last June.
"It's been crazy," Miller told NEWSTALK 1010 Friday. "We didn't anticipate this and our suppliers certainly didn't. We ran out of a lot of different products."
The highest demand has been for t-shirts and ball caps bearing the colourful Canada 150 logo--. Mugs and tattoos have been popular too.
Miller doesn't believe these patriotic tchotchkes will wind up at garage sales and donation bins by next Canada Day.
"I think they're going to keep it and cherish it and have it for a long time. And I think we're going to keep our 150 merchandise up on our website because I think it's going to continue on right to the end of the year."
