A short but quick burst of wind gusts blew through the GTA Sunday afternoon, leaving some serious damage behind.
A wind warning was in effect with the possibility of wind gusts that could approach 100km/hour. The gusts hit just after 3:30 p.m. and in their wake uprooted trees and downed power lines.
Toronto Hydro spokesperson Mallory Cunnington told Newestalk 1010 approximately 25,000 customers are currently without power. The hardest hit areas appear to be in the west end of the city, including Etobicoke south down to the lake, as well as Midtown Toronto and Scarborough to the east. While many will understandably be frustrated waiting out the restoration of power, priority is being given to emergency situations, including downed power lines.
"Those are our top priorities. Public safety calls take a significant priority in our control room."
Cunnington added that the utility company was ready for potential damage after severe weather warnings were issued Saturday. Even with added manpower and extra crews that have been dispatched to tend to the outages, restoration will take a bit of time.
"We brought in as many extra crews as we could get in working today. Right now it' s hard to access because we haven't had crews out to access what they're going into. We're doing everything we can to get power back on as safely and quickly. They will work until all power is restored."
No injuries have been reported so far.
