A 45-year-old woman is in life-threatening condition after a bizarre hit and run near Dundas St E and Sherbourne St.
Toronto Police say the woman had intentionally laid down in the street at about 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Const. Clint Stibbe could not explain why the woman put herself in harm's way or how long she was there.
He says the driver of a grey minivan noticed the woman and was able to steer around her. But the driver of a second vehicle, a dark-coloured SUV hit the woman and drove away.
"They have thought they were involved, not necessarily in a collision, but maybe struck some garbage or some debris on the roadway. The reality was that person struck an individual. We are asking that they contact police as soon as possible," Stibbe said.
Police have not yet been able to offer a model or licence plate for the SUV but are hoping surveillance video can help.
Investigators would also like to speak with the driver of the minivan that missed the woman.
"They are, if anything, one of the best witnesses we have."
