Imagine owning a bar or restaurant during a pandemic.
You've managed to cling to life through the lockdowns, and then through the limited number of people allowed through the doors.
But, this comes as another kick to the shins.
At renewal time, insurance companies are jacking their rates or even refusing to renew the policies altogether.
And it appears to all come down to risk.
"With risk increasing, exposure increases, and insurance is like that actually," says Pete Karageorgos from the Insurance Bureau of Canada. "The greater the risk, the greater the exposure and the likelyhood of costs being more."
He says because we're seeing more and more cases of COVID-19, while these businesses are open, that opens the door for potential lawsuits in the event someone gets infected while inside the busines.
That's where the risk comes in.
However, it's also illegal to open a bar or tavern without insurance.
Karageorgos says his best solution is for the owner to shop around and try and find a better deal.
"Your current broker may not have the same access at today's date that they did a year ago. So, it may mean calling others, it may mean more legwork on behalf of those businesses to find coverage."
Premier Doug Ford, meanwhile, didn't mince words.
"This is the time these big insurance companies need to step up like everyone else has. They need to step up and start supporting, rather than running for the hills."
