A police officer in York Region faces a charge related to impaired driving after being arrested during a traffic stop.

Authorities say a vehicle was stopped by police on Clearmeadow Drive in Newmarket at around 1:30am on Sunday.

Allegations are Const. Ryan Harrison, a 15-year veteran of the York Regional Police service, failed a roadside breath test.

Officials say Harrison was off-duty at the time.

He'd previously been assigned to work on department's gang and drug enforcement unit but has been on a leave of absence since last November.

Harrison faces a charge of exceeding the legal limit of 80mg of alchohol for every 100ml of blood.
