A young mother and her boyfriend are accused of killing an 8-month boy.
Police in Durham Region believe 26-year old Jordan Brownell and 25-year old Denim Henderson are responsible for the death of little Kaleb McKay.
They were arrested on Thursday.
This story started December 29, 2016, when paramedics and police got calls for help from an apartment on Robson St. in Oshawa.
It was there that police say they found a baby with 'numerous' injuries and while emergency responders did everything they could to save the child, he died that night in the hospital.
Const. George Tudos says it was obvious at the outset that McKay was badly hurt, but Tudos wasn't able to provide any insight into why its taken roughly a year-and-a-half to lay charges in this case.
Authorities say its part of evidence that will be revealed through court hearings.
All that's known so far about the couple is that they lived together in Oshawa, and that Henderson was not Kaleb's father.
It is Henderson who prosecutors believe to be most to blame in this death.
He faces the most serious charge of second-degree murder, along with allegations of aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm.
Brownell is accused of manslaughter.
Investigators would not comment on what they believe happened the night McKay died.
Bail hearings were scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
It is unclear whether or not Brownell has other children.
